PARLIAMENT OF AUSTRALIA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES Preliminary Part 1 Section ^3 1 ^3 Simplified outline of this Act 2 This Act establishes gender representation requirements for 3 appointments to offices within the Executive Government of the 4 Commonwealth. 5 A Minister who makes an appointment to an office covered by this 6 Act, or who recommends an appointment to such an office to the 7 Governor-General, must be satisfied that after the appointment at 8 least the required percentage of persons holding that office will be 9 male, and at least the required percentage will be female. 10 The required percentage starts at 20% and then increases with each 11 election polling day until it reaches 40%. 12 The Prime Minister must report to the Parliament about the steps 13 being taken to achieve the gender representation requirements and 14 about failures to comply with those requirements. 15 ^4 Definitions 16 In this Act: 17 appoint includes reappoint. 18 corporate Commonwealth entity has the same meaning as in the 19 Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2003. 20 election polling day means the polling day for a general election of 21 the members of the House of Representatives. 22 non-corporate Commonwealth entity has the same meaning as in 23 the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2003. 24 required percentage: see section ^5. 25 ^5 Meaning of required percentage 26 For the purposes of this Act, the required percentage is: 27 (a) for an appointment made on or after the first election polling 28 day that occurs after the commencement of this Part, but 29 before the second such day—20%; or No. , 2016 Executive Government (Gender Representation) Bill 2016 3 184 The Last Sentry at the Gate: Clive Palmer & the 44th Parliament of Australia
